Pediatric Dentistry
We understand that a child's first dental visit can be a source of anxiety for both parents and children. At Dr. Marilyn Nohra's pediatric dental practice, we've designed the first visit to be a positive, gentle introduction to dental care.
Our goal is to establish a comfortable relationship between your child and our dental team, laying the foundation for a lifetime of good oral health habits and positive dental experiences.
For most children, the first visit is simple and includes:
We recommend scheduling your child's first dental visit by their first birthday or when their first tooth appears, following the guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
Preparing your child for their first dental visit can help make the experience positive and stress-free. Here are some tips to help you get ready:
Use positive, age-appropriate language when discussing the upcoming visit. Avoid words like "hurt," "pain," or "shot" that might create unnecessary anxiety. Instead, explain that the dentist will count and clean their teeth and make sure their smile stays healthy.
There are many wonderful children's books about visiting the dentist. Reading these together can help familiarize your child with what to expect in a fun, non-threatening way. Some favorites include "Curious George Visits the Dentist," "The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist," and "Dora Goes to the Dentist."
Role-playing can be a great way to prepare. Take turns being the dentist and the patient. Use a toothbrush to count each other's teeth and talk about how the dentist will check their smile. This helps demystify the experience.
Choose an appointment time when your child is well-rested and typically in good spirits. Avoid scheduling during regular nap times or when they might be hungry.
Children are perceptive and can sense your anxiety. Stay positive and calm, even if you have your own dental anxieties. Your confidence will help your child feel secure.
To make your first visit as smooth as possible, please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment to complete your child's medical history forms.
